What is People+Content / H.239 / Duo Video?

Polycom's implementation of the H.239 ITU recommended standard they call "People + Content". People + Content is cross compatible with other H.239 capable video conferencing systems. The meaning of People + Content is intended to convey the transmission of two video channels which, allow users to send and receive two video channels between video conferencing endpoints.

Tandberg (now a Cisco organization) developed and marketed their own technology that was later merged into the H.239 standard, which they called Duo Video. The Cisco marketing name for this is NPP (Natural Presenter Package).

Advantages of People+Content / H.239

H.239, when invoked between video conferencing systems, enables users to both see people and to share images from multiple video sources (typically a document camera, PC or Mac) at the same time. The important result is that a group of people in one location can see and hear the people in another location while all participants in both locations see a PC/MAC presentation or document camera image.

Disadvantages of People+Content / H.239

Display parameters must be matched with the display capabilities of the video conferencing systems at all locations in order to produce clear and well formatted secondary video channel views. Generally, H.239, in order to produce large enough video images of PC images to be useful in a group meeting, requires use of a full screen or even a large secondary monitor (presuming the primary monitor is used to view people on a video conference). As such, implementation of H.239 can require additional hardware for use with a video conference such as a secondary monitor.
