What is an MCU?

Video Conferencing systems can be connected to one another directly in a Point-to-Point session, or they can be connected in a 3 way video conference in what is called a "multipoint video conference call".

Three way video conference meetings, four way video conference meetings and more are all called "multipoint video conferences". The equipment and software that make possible a connection between more than two video conferencing clients or systems in the same session are called a Multipoint Control Unit or "MCU".

MCU's can be hardware based such as the Codian 4505 High Definition MCU or they can be software based as part of an application such as Apple Inc.'s FaceTime application.
